Clog-clearing chemicals are not always the best choice for getting your drain working properly. In some cases, it may seem like the easiest solution, but these chemicals do not always fix the problem. Often, they create even more serious issues.

For example, while many products these days claim to be safe for pipes, if you look closely at the manufacturer’s instructions, you may notice that the product is only safe for certain types of plumbing systems. Is yours on that list? Do you know what type of pipes you have in your entire system? In addition, the chemicals may damage the finish on some types of plumbing fixtures, they may kill beneficial bacteria in septic tanks, and they may have reactions with other chemicals further down the line.

After all of that, if drain chemicals may not be right for you, what can you do to get rid of that clog? Why not simply try using a plunger, drain snake, vinegar and baking soda, or hot water and dish soap first?
