Cockroaches are known to spread diseases such as salmonella and dysentery.  They can also cause allergies and asthma.  With good reason, then, if you see evidence of them in your home or apartment, you will look for every way to get rid of them.  This is not an easy task, though, as cockroaches are difficult to get rid of.  They can produce thousands of offspring, need hardly any food to survive on and have an ability to survive submerged in water for up to half an hour.  So, lets look at some ways to keep cockroaches under control:

Cleaning is one way.  Cockroaches love dirty, moist environments.  When cleaning the kitchen, include a thorough cleaning of kitchen cabinets, under the sink and underneath and behind appliances, even the larger ones like the oven and refrigerator.  Don’t forget they love the bathroom too so keep it clean and as dry as possible.  You can also find them in the home’s crawlspaces.

Its important to eliminate things that attract cockroaches.  Use tightly sealed containers to store food in and keep a secure lid on the trash can.  If possible, don’t leave out pet food.  Cockroaches do not like well lit places so keep some lights on at night to deter them.

As we mentioned earlier cockroaches enjoy damp environments.  Fix any leaking pipes or dripping taps in the home.  If you find areas that are possible points of entry for cockroaches, seal the area.

If you have a severe cockroach infestation, it is best for you to have the place treated by a professional pest control expert.  When this has been done, place boric acid in places that you have seen evidence of these pests which will help keep them under control.
