Many people who are buying a home have asked themselves “Can I just do my own home inspection?”. Especially f someone has a construction background this is a question that they may seriously consider. So why hire a home inspector even if you have a construction background? Here are some reasons:
- Objectivity. Seems like a simple answer, but that objectivity is not just for you. Let’s say on your self-done home inspection you notice a section of foundation wall out of place that was covered before. If you wanted to negotiate this with the seller or get it evaluated, most people would not take your word for it. Even if you hired someone to prove your point for you, from that point on your negotiations may be strained because the issue was found by you and not a professional – they may even take it the wrong way and dismiss your claim that it is a real issue.
- Emotions. Even home inspectors hire other home inspectors. When we buy a home, we may not realize the emotions we have involved, or even the stress. This can seriously cloud our judgement and inspection skills. An objective person with no emotion in the game can be worth its weight in gold.
- Peace of mind. No matter who we are, a second opinion by a professional can really help us sleep at night. It also gives us an opportunity to bounce things off of another person who understands what he is looking at.
