To protect ourselves from a hazard, we first need to recognize that the hazard exists. One of the many hazards that can come up in everyday life is that of carbon monoxide poisoning. This gas can be extremely dangerous – if it’s breathed in high concentrations, it can kill an adult in as little as five minutes. Unfortunately, carbon monoxide can easily develop in your home. What can you do?
One big thing that can be done is to install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the house. Be especially alert to placing detectors near heating elements, since carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels. Of course, simply detecting that carbon monoxide exists in your home is not exactly proactive. One thing you can do to prevent it from developing in the first place is to keep fuel-burning devices in good repair. Have a professional inspect your chimneys and gas appliances regularly.
