There are many areas of the home in which condensation can occur. Older homes that do not have vapor barriers of sealers in the concrete (which forces moisture up through the foundation) are more likely to experience condensation.
Do you need to do anything about condensation?
Although it can sometimes be just an annoyance, if there is constant dripping water onto a surface, this could create a variety of issues. Some of these issues are mold problems, fire (if water comes into contact with electrics) and even rotting flooring.
How can you deal with condensation?
- A way of lessening condensation is by lowering the humidity levels in the home. A dehumidifier is a very effective way of lowering humidity levels because it forces the water vapor to condense into a water tank instead of on other things in the home. An air conditioner also helps to reduce humidity.
- Insulating pipes etc. is another way of decreasing condensation because it prevents surfaces from becoming too cold which causes condensation. A plastic foam wrap works for water pipes etc. think about it first though because if you insulate water pipe a thermal insulation, you will no longer enjoy the radiant heat they supply.
- One area of the home that usually have condensation issues are basements. It might be a good idea to air out the basement, but this will not be effective if the outside air is very humid.
- Another simple way is to have less plants in the house, this can help to reduce water vapor.
Its wise to note though, that the cause of water on surfaces is not necessarily condensation. If you think you have done all you can to treat the condensation problem and water is still appearing, you could have a water leak. Contact a professional plumber to do an assessment for you is such a case as an untreated water leak will lead to a variety of problems.
