It’s a sad fact, but each year there are thousands of exercise equipment related injuries, many of these involving children.
What are some safety concerns to be aware of?
Barbells can be very dangerous, especially for children. Keep them securely stored, away from places that children can easily access.
Treadmills typically come with a safety key that attaches to the person operating it. This is so that the treadmill will immediately switch off the second there is a problem. Make sure that whoever is using the treadmill knows how to operate it, and uses this safety key. To ensure the safety of children, keep the cord that is attached to the safety key out of a child’s reach.
Caution is needed when listening to loud music or TV whilst exercising. If a child has come into the room without you noticing, this could be dangerous. Position gym equipment is such a way so that you can clearly see who is entering the room.
As we all know, it is difficult for children to stay away from things that look like a lot of fun to play with. Keep gym equipment in their locked positions when not in use. Unplug the equipment after using to prevent a child from turning it on accidentally. If it is possible, the best thing to do is lock the room containing your gym equipment.
