We are all aware of the ongoing wildfires in California this year, and we are also no strangers to that here. While it is very hard to stop a wildfire when it is happening, are there protective measures we can take with our own homes and land that would help protect them in a fire?

One way to do so is Defensible Space. This is when the surroundings of a home or building are prepared so that it is much harder for a wildfire to spread and destroy the home. Perhaps the immediate area surrounding the home would be cleared of foliage or anything that increases the spread of fire.

How can Defensible Space help with protecting a building?

One of the most important ways is that it allows easy access to the home or building, so that fire trucks would be easily able to reach it. Firefighters then have the best chance of saving the building because they are right there at the site.

For a Defensible Space to be effective though, it needs be properly and regularly cared for. This means constantly keeping areas of vegetation or materials that provide fuel for a fire clear. A fire will weaken much easier if there is nothing for it to burn, in that way, firefighters can take care of it.

If you live in a location with a pond or other body of water, keeping an area of access to it free of trees etc. enables the fire department to gain easy access to it, thus saving very valuable time.

It is a good idea to check with the local authorities before starting anything kind of project that could endanger wildlife etc. Also, different requirements exist regarding Defensible Space depending on where you live.
