Use Natural Lighting – Unfortunately, the majority of the population these days tend to rely on artificial lighting but you could save money by using natural light or ‘daylighting’. Firstly, this can be done by installing skylights above.

Of course, glass will have to be double-glazing otherwise heat will escape and you will not see the benefits of the steps you took. In addition to this, light shelves bounce light into a building and they can be incredibly effective. From the floor to the top of the window, light shelves can bring light into a room two and a half times this distance.

Also, you could use clerestory windows which are long, thin panes that sit just under where the wall and ceiling meet. With a roof overhang in position, light will be allowed in whilst being protected from the sun. Finally, light tubes are also an option as they amplify any low-level light. By utilizing special lenses, sunlight enters a highly reflective tube and, through a diffuser, projects into a living space with even distribution.
