Is your home attractive to a thief? Perhaps you are wondering what you can do to deter a would-be intruder. One thing you can do is to make your property less appealing, how can you do that? Here are a few suggestions:
Remember that a thief is an opportunist looking to enter your home easily and without being noticed so you want to make that as difficult for them as possible. Avoid planting shrubs and trees close to the home’s entrance or windows as this may provide an ideal place to stay hidden from view while breaking in. You may also decide to place fencing around the property which can act as a deterrent, just make sure it does not also provide a place for someone to hide from view. If your home has sliding glass doors it’s important that they have locks on both the top and bottom of each door. You can also place a piece of wood the size of a cut off broom handle inside the tracks of the door which will prevent it from being opened.
Doors and windows are other areas that you may need to improve on. They should be good quality and well maintained. Exterior doors should have secure deadbolt locks. To give your windows added security you can install heavy-duty wire screens or window bars. If you choose to do this, however, make sure that everyone inside the home would easily be able to exit the windows in an emergency.
Another excellent deterrent is lighting. Place lights on every side of the home’s exterior and fit them with motion detectors that will tell you when someone is outside. Leave some lights on inside the home if you are going to be away to give the idea that you are home.
These simple suggestions will help to make your home a lot less attractive to a thief.
