This month we’ve been talking about preparing your home for the winter months. If you have a fireplace you will no doubt be looking forward to a warm and cozy fire to sit next to, but have you checked the condition of the chimney lately? While it is recommended that you have your chimney inspected by a professional, there are a few simple ways to tell if it is falling into disrepair. Here are some of them:

Firstly, it’s good to analyze the ways a chimney could fall into disrepair. Large objects falling on them such as scaffolding, or tree limbs, etc. are among the more obvious ways a chimney can sustain damage. Then there are extremes of weather that can gradually erode the brick and mortar. Earthquakes and tornadoes are also reasons that a chimney will need maintenance.

What are some visible signs that would indicate the chimney is in poor condition and needs repairing? One sign that a homeowner can look out for is if the chimney looks like it is leaning or listing. Stand away from the home far enough to see the whole chimney, does it appear to be separating from the rest of the house? How are the chimney’s footings? Do they show signs of deterioration? Another simple test to do is take a screwdriver and scrape some of the mortar, does it crumble easily? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then the chimney needs repair.

It is important to keep a chimney in good condition, otherwise this could start to pose a danger, not only to anyone on the outside of the building but to anyone inside as well, this is because a chimney that is in danger of collapse can fall in on itself, placing anyone inside at great risk of injury. If you are concerned about the condition of your chimney, don’t hesitate to contact us for more advice.
